Miami Treatment Program

Many people struggling with addiction also find themselves caught in the painful grip of depression, mood disorders, panic disorders or other serious mental health issues. Studies have shown that addiction and mental health disorders are best treated when both conditions are addressed simultaneously with a complete treatment plan. At Family Recovery Specialists, we begin your evaluation with a bio-psycho-social assessment and substance abuse history. We then look to our very experienced physicians to have a psychiatric evaluation done as part of the assessment process along with a battery of psychological testing, when necessary. This comprehensive data allows us to meet you where you are and customize addiction recovery and mental health services to meet your unique needs.

What is a Co-Occurring Disorder?

A co-occurring disorder means that a client may suffer from a substance abuse problem together with at least one diagnosable mental health condition. The addiction may develop while self-medicating a mood, anxiety disorder, or other psychiatric condition, or the mental health disorder may develop as a result of a serious substance use disorder. According to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH), over 9 million people who abuse drugs or alcohol also have a co-occurring mental health diagnosis. Common diagnoses include:

  • Severe depression
  • Bipolar or other mood disorder
  • Anxiety or panic disorder
  • Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)
  • Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
  • Eating disorder (anorexia or bulimia)
  • Schizophrenia or other psychotic disorder

A co-occurring disorder can make it nearly impossible for men and women to hold a steady job, function in their family environment, go to school, or build satisfying personal relationships. It is critical that guests seek help for all conditions to return to a full, productive and happy life.
